October Meeting

Speaker: Judy Moody, Mixed Fiber & Gourd Artist

The gourd plant has been described as one of nature's greatest gifts to mankind. Of all the known plants, the gourd is the only one experts believe spanned the entire globe in prehistoric times. Evidence indicates that gourds were used as containers long before baskets or pottery served that purpose.

You ask, "What is a gourd?". Unfortunately, that simple question does not have a simple answer. Familiar members of it's extensive family are pumpkins, squash, melons...to name only a few. Gourds come in a great variety of shapes and sizes. Most artists find gourds to be a unique and exciting medium to use. They offer the opportunity to use a variety of tools, supplies and techniques not used in your everyday experiences in art and provide a good partner to combine with other mediums, such as weaving, and the use of textures.

Workshop - Introduction to Kumihimo with Rosalie Neilson

The workshop will focus on the braid structure known as 16-element Kongō Gumi where 8 elements are color A and eight elements are color B. The “Lattice” designs of Kongō Gumi feature a single motif outlined by a prominent diagonal line. The motifs can be symmetric or asymmetric. In the “Yin-Yang” braids of Kongō Gumi, the eight spots of color A are an exact replica of those in color B but they occur in the reverse direction with motifs that nestle into one another. Braiders will use a foam disk and satin cord to make two key chains. (Braiders who have a marudai may choose to braid their Kongō Gumi braids on the stand.)
